While planning to go on a vacation or traveling for some work, most of us take travel insurance plans. Do you think that taking an insurance plan is enough? What if something goes wrong and you have to claim the insurance? Do you know how to go about it? No, then here I will tell you how to easily claim travel insurance for lost or stolen goods.
OWNERSHIP PROOF
Insurance companies will most often refuse your claim if you don’t have any proof of ownership of your stolen goods. The best proof of ownership is the original receipt. Do you have all your original receipts in safeguard? Well I am a really lazy person and don’t bother to keep the receipts of not so dear goods. Then I would say that the representative of the company is also a human being and the company also is not so evil. The company will accept your claim for general stuff like cloths, toiletries, luggage etc. but without a proof of brand or value, what you will get as claim will only be a fraction of its true value.
I hope that when you are planning for a vacation, you must be taking a digital camera with you. So take photos of the entire luggage you are taking with you, especially the brand and style, with tags. Also prepare a list of all the items you are taking in a spreadsheet and save these photos and spreadsheet at your home. If possible, save these at some of your account on internet as well so that you don’t have to wait to claim insurance, till you get back home.
REPLACEMENT VALUE
Travel insurance companies usually give you the amount after subtracting depreciation from it. So you will be able to buy a second hand replacement for your stolen goods. But for some goods, even the second hand cost would not be too low. If the insurance company does not give the adequate amount for such goods, you can provide the company with proofs of true market value (for e.g. classifieds and second hand shops). If the company still refuses to pay, you can take it to court.
POLICE REPORTS AND PROOF
The insurance companies will not take your word if your goods are stolen. You have to submit a proof. The proof can be in the form of a police report or a statement from airlines or cruise ship if the incident happened in their territory.
Getting a police report may be troublesome in some countries. You can contact your embassy or consulate in that case. If the country provides travel police, then that will be the best option for you.
LUGGAGE LEFT UNATTENDED
The insurance companies will not accept your claim if you left your luggage unattended and it got lost. Nobody however leaves the luggage unattended (except me) but it also includes leaving the luggage unlocked, with someone you don’t know, with the guard at hotels or with tour companies.
So no need to worry now Just take travel insurance policy and go for a relaxing vacation as you already know how to easily claim travel insurance for lost or stolen goods.
